Instagram does not provide a built-in list labeled “people who unfollowed me.” To identify individual accounts reliably, you need evidence from two different times: an earlier followers list and a later followers list.
An export-based method uses relationship records downloaded directly from Instagram. It does not need to guess from a changing follower count, repeatedly inspect public profiles, or ask for your Instagram password.
Step 1: Create the first snapshot
Request your Instagram information through Accounts Center and download the official ZIP archive. Select follower and following information, use a complete date range, and choose JSON when Instagram offers a format choice.
Upload this first archive to UnfollowTrace. The first import creates a baseline. It can show current relationships such as accounts you follow that do not follow you back, but it cannot yet confirm a later unfollow.

Step 2: Wait for a meaningful interval
A comparison is only useful when the snapshots represent different times. You might create another export after a week, a month, or another interval that matches how often you want to review audience changes.
UnfollowTrace is not connected to Instagram in the background, so the dashboard does not update by itself. A new official export is required for every new snapshot.
Step 3: Download and upload a later export
Repeat the Instagram export process for the same account. Keep the new ZIP separate from the earlier file so you can identify the dates. Upload the later archive after Instagram finishes preparing it.
The importer associates the snapshot with the account represented by the archive. If the archive is invalid, empty, not a ZIP, or missing required relationship files, the upload should be corrected rather than treated as a valid comparison.
Step 4: Read the comparison
The comparison looks for accounts present in the earlier followers snapshot but absent from the later snapshot. Those accounts can be reported as Instagram unfollowers for the period between the two exports.
The reverse comparison identifies new followers: accounts absent earlier but present later. Current non-followers are still calculated from the followers and following lists in a single snapshot.
What the result does not prove
An account missing from a later export may have unfollowed, become unavailable, changed in a way that affects the record, or been removed by Instagram. The comparison accurately reports the list difference available in the official exports; it should not claim access to motives or actions that the data does not include.
Likewise, a lower follower total cannot identify the accounts responsible. Ten new followers and twelve lost followers produce a net change of two, but the total alone hides both sets. Comparing actual relationship records is more informative than tracking only the count.
How often should you export?
There is no universal schedule. A personal account might compare monthly, while an account running a short campaign might choose a shorter interval. More frequent exports create narrower comparison windows, but they also require more manual downloads.
Choose a schedule you can maintain. Consistent snapshots are more useful than several exports created on the same day. Label or organize downloaded files by date, and avoid uploading the same archive repeatedly.
Why use an export instead of direct account access?
Some follower tools request Instagram credentials or depend on direct account access. An export-based tracker works from a file you requested yourself. With UnfollowTrace, you sign in to the product rather than signing in to Instagram through the tracker.
