An Instagram data export is a ZIP archive prepared by Instagram. Depending on the categories you selected, it may contain profile information, comments, messages, media references, saved items, and follower relationships.
The archive is not a special UnfollowTrace file. It is your official Instagram export, and its contents reflect the choices and date range used when you made the request.
Why Instagram delivers a ZIP
A ZIP groups many files and folders into one download. Compression can reduce the download size, while the directory structure keeps different categories organized. The archive name and internal layout may vary as Instagram updates its export system.
Keep the ZIP intact for upload. Removing files, changing folder names, or recompressing only part of the archive can prevent an importer from finding the expected relationship records.
JSON vs. HTML export formats
Instagram may allow you to choose between JSON and HTML. Both can represent your information, but they serve different primary purposes.
- JSON stores structured values that software can parse consistently. It is usually the clearest choice for an automated follower report.
- HTML creates pages intended for a person to open in a browser. It can be convenient for manual browsing, but the information is wrapped in presentation markup.
Choose JSON when the export screen offers the choice and your goal is structured analysis. If you already have an HTML export, check the upload requirements shown by the product rather than editing the archive yourself.
Follower and following records
The relationship section is the important part for an unfollow tracker. It contains records representing accounts that follow you and accounts you follow. Instagram may organize these under folders or labels related to followers and following.
With one snapshot, those lists support current relationship calculations:
- An account in Followers and Following is a mutual relationship.
- An account in Following but not Followers does not currently follow you back.
- An account in Followers but not Following follows you even though you do not currently follow it back.
To identify who later unfollowed, the Followers records from one export must be compared with the Followers records from a later export.
What timestamps mean
Some relationship records can include timestamps associated with the recorded relationship. Those values may help describe the export, but they should not be treated as a complete unfollow activity log. A missing account in a later snapshot does not come with an exact unfollow time.
The reliable comparison window is bounded by your snapshots: the account appeared earlier and did not appear later. Narrower intervals can create a narrower change window, but they still do not create continuous monitoring.
What UnfollowTrace does not need
For its relationship analysis, UnfollowTrace does not need access to the full range of personal information that may exist in an Instagram export. The browser filters the selected archive before required follower and following files are sent for processing.
The original ZIP stays in your browser. Required source files are deleted after processing, while parsed report results are retained to provide the dashboard and future comparisons. Consult the current privacy policy for the governing data practices.
Common archive problems
The file is not a ZIP
Upload the archive delivered by Instagram rather than an individual JSON or HTML file unless the upload screen explicitly supports it.
The archive does not contain relationship data
Request a new export and include Followers and Following. An archive limited to another category cannot produce a follower relationship report.
The archive is empty or incomplete
Download it again from Instagram and confirm the transfer completed. Avoid modifying the contents before upload.
The account does not match
Use exports for the same Instagram account when building a comparison. Snapshots from different accounts do not describe a valid before-and-after sequence.
What to do next
If you have not requested the archive yet, begin with the step-by-step Instagram export guide. After the first import, keep a later export so you can compare snapshots and identify follower changes.
Use the official ZIP you already own
Select your Instagram export and let the browser filter the relationship files needed for the report.
