Your Instagram followers and following lists describe two directions of connection. Followers are accounts that follow you. Following contains accounts you follow. The lists overlap when both accounts follow each other, but they are not expected to be identical.
One Instagram export can describe these current relationships. To identify who later unfollowed, you need at least two exports so an earlier follower list can be compared with a later one.
What the Followers list means
The Followers list contains accounts recorded as following your profile in that export. It is a snapshot of the relationship data included by Instagram, not a chronological list of every follow and unfollow event.
An account in Followers may or may not appear in Following. If it appears only in Followers, that account follows you while you do not currently follow it back.
What the Following list means
The Following list contains accounts your profile follows. If an account appears in Following but not Followers, it does not currently follow you back according to that snapshot.
This does not prove that the account unfollowed you. It may never have followed you, or it may have been absent for a long time. A single current-state export cannot establish that history.
Four useful relationship categories
- Followers only: they follow you; you do not follow them.
- Following only: you follow them; they do not follow you.
- Mutual: each account follows the other.
- Neither: the account appears in neither current list and is not part of the current relationship comparison.
Why the counts may differ
There is no requirement for your follower and following totals to match. A creator may have many followers but follow relatively few accounts. A new account may follow more people than currently follow it. The difference between totals is not itself a quality score.
The account-level lists are more informative than subtracting one total from another. Two lists can have similar totals while containing very different accounts.
How later exports add context
When you upload a later export, the followers list can be compared with the earlier one. Accounts removed between those snapshots are follower losses for that interval; accounts added are new followers. The following list can likewise reflect accounts your profile started or stopped following.
These results remain tied to the snapshots. They do not represent real-time monitoring between exports.
